Ideal for GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E custom transmission builds and performance applications, Sonnax shift lever kit 38512-03K makes it easy to install a short-length manual shaft that delivers trouble-free operation with aftermarket shifters.
While the long-length shaft found in ’95-later units is compatible with aftermarket shifters, converting to the short length found in early units is preferred to help with clearance to exhaust systems. Using an early-style, short shaft, however, can cause problems getting the linkage to work properly in all gear ranges from Park to Low. This is due to the early-style shaft’s flat indexing that cause it to operate at different angles than the late-style, long shafts as shown in this diagram.
Installing Sonnax 38512-03K lets you overcome this problem with a hybrid design that combines a short shaft length with the indexing angles of a late-style shaft. This unique upgrade is configured to work with the '95-later detent rooster comb that features a square identification hole and .316" wide internal flats. The kit can be retrofitted into early 4L80-E units, but requires using a ’95-later detent rooster comb.
