Six Ways from Sunday: Diagnosing ZF6 & Ford 6R60/80 TC-Related Drivability Concerns
Bob Warnke
Sonnax test manifold kit can prove or disprove internal mechanical sealing ability only; it does not test the integrity of the electrical coil and contacts. See instructions for details.
The leading cause of solenoid failure in Ford 6R60, 6R75, 6R80, 6R100, ZF6HP19/26/32 (Gen. 1) and ZF6HP21/28/34 (Gen. 2) units is an inability to maintain an internal mechanical seal, resulting in a multitude of drivability concerns. Since it is not an electrical failure, it can be difficult to evaluate whether a solenoid is the cause of a particular problem.
Sonnax solenoid test manifold kit 95430-VTK allows quick, easy, cost-effective pass/fail verification of the solenoid's internal sealing integrity, taking the guess work out of replacing solenoids.
Ford 6R60, 6R75, 6R80, 6R100 solenoids function very similarly to the the ZF6 Gen. 1 versions (although with a significantly lower failure rate) and can be tested using these manifolds, though the colors differ. See chart below for reference:
Manifold | ZF6 Solenoid | 6R60 or 6R75 Solenoid | 6R80 or 6R100 Solenoid |
---|---|---|---|
Blue | Blue Cap | Black Cap | Black Snout |
Yellow | Yellow Cap | Brown Cap | Brown Snout (Must be energized to test) |
Orange | Orange Cap | - | - |
Sonnax valve body layouts provide a detailed overview of individual units making it quick and easy to determine what’s available for the specific valve body you’re working on. See all Sonnax valve body layouts.
