Anatomy of a Transmission: Oil Flow in the Pump-PR-Converter-Cooler Lube Circuits
Gregg Nader
The Toyota/Lexus U660E/F, U760E/F transmissions may exhibit harsh 4-5 upshifts/downshifts, delayed Reverse or Neutral to Drive engagement due to wear in the clutch control valve bore. A common wear location in the bore is at the outboard spring pocket, where SL1 pressure works with the spring to keep the valve bottomed in the bore. The resulting SL1 leakage diminishes fluid pressure to the sequence valve and C1 clutch, creating delayed engagement.
Wear at the inboard bore area can allow SL2 pressure loss, resulting in diminished fluid pressure to the C2 clutch and 4-5 or 5-4 shift flares or harshness.
Reconditioning the bore and installing Sonnax oversized clutch control valve kit 47740-22K restores hydraulic integrity in the circuit.
Sonnax valve body layouts provide a detailed overview of individual units making it quick and easy to determine what’s available for the specific valve body you’re working on. See all Sonnax valve body layouts.
